Zebra has always held a special place in my heart. Being from South Louisiana (though Zebra has enjoyed a strong fanbase in Long Island, the trio is from New Orleans), I grew up hearing about them from my older brother who saw them many times at clubs. This was back when they did mostly covers by bands such as Led Zeppelin, Rush, and The Moody Blues. Of course, they always intermingled a few of their originals. Being born in 1972, I wasn’t old enough to see them back in the club days and would listen to my brother and his friends describe the concerts with opening acts like 24-K and Dark August. Man, I was born too late!
This tune is from Zebra’s 1984 sophomore effort No Tellin Lies. Zebra’s website describes it:
“Lullaby” is not a typical Zebra song. As a heartfelt tribute to John Lennon, who had been slain in 1980, it was much more Beatlesque in its style and delivery. It did get some airplay on contemporary adult radio stations not interested in Zebra before (or since).

At around 2:48 the song segues into a solo that intertwines with some background audio of John Lennon speaking. When I first heard this song as a 12 year-old I had no idea what it was about or what the dialogue was. To call this song “Beatlesque” is a bit of an understatement. Lead vocalist Randy Jackson is a HUGE fan of the Beatles and you can hear their influence on several of their songs.
